How I’m Helping Tali Navigate Big Emotions
Working with reactive dogs has always been a part of my dog training journey, but there’s something unique about going through it with your own pup. Today, I’m sharing my experience with Tali, my young Border Collie, and how we’re working together to overcome her reactivity challenges.
Tali’s Reactivity Story
From the start, Tali showed signs of being wary around new dogs. While she quickly settled into my pack, her discomfort around unfamiliar dogs became clear. One major turning point was when I introduced her to a friend’s puppy in my indoor training barn. I made a critical mistake—I rushed the introduction. Tali had a strong fear reaction, running away and barking uncontrollably. Since then, walks became stressful, with her barking at other dogs and showing signs of anxiety.
The Reality of Reactivity
Reactivity can be overwhelming for both dogs and their humans. It’s not just about barking or lunging; it’s about helping our dogs feel safe and confident in the world. Tali’s journey reminded me that even as a professional dog trainer, mistakes happen. It’s how we learn and adapt that makes the difference.
Building a Training Plan
One thing became clear—I needed a structured plan. Here’s what I focused on:
- Controlled Exposure: Choosing quiet spaces where I could manage her environment and slowly introduce distractions.
- Engagement Games: Using fun pattern games to help her focus on me and feel more secure.
- Short, Positive Sessions: Keeping training sessions brief to avoid overwhelming her and stacking triggers.
Recently, we had a breakthrough moment. During a trip to a busy garden center, Tali stayed calm around people and even managed to spot a dog without reacting. It was a small victory but a significant step forward.
Exciting News: A New Online Course!
This journey has inspired me to create a 6-week online course focused on helping reactive dogs and their humans. In this course, I’ll share my exact step-by-step plan, the exercises that have worked for Tali, and how you can implement them with your own dog. It’s all about building confidence and calm, one session at a time.
Join Me In Person!
For those in the UK, I’m hosting a face-to-face workshop – Cool and Connected – on March 9th. It’s a full day dedicated to hands-on reactivity training, where you’ll leave with practical tools to strengthen your bond with your dog.
Final Thoughts
Reactivity isn’t something that resolves overnight, but with patience, planning, and the right strategies, progress is absolutely possible. If you’re navigating this journey with your dog, know that you’re not alone.
