Why Walking Your Border Collie Isn’t Enough To Get Them Tired

It never ceases to amaze me how many hours Border Collie owners spend walking their dogs, only to find that it doesn’t seem to tire them out. I often get asked for recommendations on fun games or puzzles to satisfy their Border Collie’s needs. But the truth is, while games and puzzles can be helpful, there’s nothing more effective than training behaviours that engage both their body and mind.

The Key to a Happy, Fulfilled Border Collie

Border Collies thrive when they have a “job” to do. That doesn’t necessarily mean herding sheep—though it’s a wonderful outlet for their natural instincts. It could be anything that stimulates them physically and mentally, giving them a sense of purpose.

For example, I haven’t taken Kite, my Border Collie, to work sheep in over a week. That’s right—a full week without herding! You might think that a dog bred for this specific purpose would go stir-crazy, but Kite hasn’t skipped a beat. Why? Because we’ve been working on sport foundation training, building blocks for competitive obedience, and strengthening our relationship through focused activities.

In a small space—even just a barn—I’ve been able to give Kite the mental and physical challenges he craves. He hasn’t stalked, circled, or displayed any restless behaviours because his needs are being met through meaningful engagement. Training exercises that encourage focus, precision, and teamwork are just as fulfilling as herding sheep for him.

Stop Making Excuses—Start Training!

If you find yourself struggling to tire out your Border Collie or keep them satisfied, it’s time to shift your mindset. You don’t need acres of land or endless hours in a day. What you need is a plan—and I can help you create one!

Here are some key things to remember:

  • It’s not about exhausting your dog through physical exercise alone. Mental stimulation is just as important, if not more so.
  • Small spaces can work wonders. You don’t need a large area to engage your dog effectively. Structured training sessions in a small space can make a huge difference.
  • Training is the ultimate “game.” It’s fun, rewarding, and incredibly satisfying for your dog.

Let’s stop making excuses and start working with your dogs in a way that truly meets their needs. Whether it’s through basic obedience, advanced training, or relationship-building activities, I’m here to help.
